Suicide Awareness and Prevention
The training begins with a discussion regarding stigma (i.e. discrimination, prejudice) toward mental illness and suicide. We identify appropriate and inclusive language versus stigmatizing language. Information related to mental health, emotional well-being, and suicide prevention is provided as well as identification of issues that may lead to suicide including depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and drug/alcohol use. We will discuss the signs related to suicide and assist youth in determining if they or their peers are at risk for suicide. Youth are directed to not make promises of confidence when they are concerned about peer suicide. We conclude with a discussion about healthy, effective coping skills to manage suicidal thoughts and offer community resources to provide a safety net for youth concerned about themselves or others experiencing suicidal thoughts.
This training meets Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education suicide prevention education for students guidelines.
